World-wide changes in power generation and energy provisioning, as well as the generally accepted challenge of CO2-emission reduction will necessitate decisive changes in the organization and future technical development of mobility. The tightening of available crude oil and gas resources and the hereby induced rise in prices, in combination with the increasing electrical power generation by wind and solar energy, motivates a respective increase in the electrification of mobile power delivery. Recent technical developments, especially in the fields of hybrid and battery technology, already respond to this challenge, but both energy density and pulse power delivery are less then appropriate as of today. The post graduate program “Integrated Energy Supply Modules for Roadbound E-Mobility” addresses this demanding topic by scientific exploration of the physical foundations of electro-chemical storage and its combination with novel fuel-operated aggregates for drivable range extension. Fuel-operated range extenders facilitate a reasonable dimensioning of the electrical storage size and its thermal conditioning.
The research at the Institute of Heat and Mass Transfer addresses two aspects, the intelligent temperature control of the electro-chemical storage and the efficient cooling of the high-performance electronics, which convert the electrical energy from the battery to the power engine.
