For the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from combustion of fossil fuels the separation of carbon dioxide from the flue gas and the storage afterwards are of huge interest. This process is known as "carbon capture and storage" (CCS). One variant of CCS is the oxy-combustion where the reaction rates differ compared to air combustion. This can be explained not only with the different thermophysical and radiative properties of CO2 and N2 but also by the fact that CO2 directly participates in the chemical reactions. This work presents experimental and numerical investigations on the flameless combustion in an oxyfuel atmosphere. Experiments were carried out in order to examine the stability limits of flameless combustion in an atmosphere of CO2/O2 and N2/O2 depending on the O2 content of the oxidator mixture. Based on detailed measurements the species and temperature distributions in the combustion chamber were compared. The focus regarding the numerical investigations was set on the influence of two different combustion models (EDM/EDC) on the combustion process. The results of the numerical simulations were validated by experimental data and used for predicting combustion under flameless and oxyfuel conditions.
