The 4th Advanced Talents Day, which this year was focused on the topic Career Booster Tenure Track?, took place at RWTH on February 11, 2019. The event was a collaboration with the University of Cologne and featured talks and interactive workshops to inform researchers of their future academic perspectives, present transparent career options, and encourage young talent to be pursued in the best possible way.

The event featured talks and interactive workshops to inform researchers of their future academic perspectives, present transparent career options, and encourage young talent to be pursued in the best possible way.

Rector of RWTH, professor Ulrich Rüdiger, opened the event by encouraging young researchers at RWTH to pursue an academic career path in his welcome address. The researchers then found out about many aspects of the tenure track process at RWTH and the University of Cologne in the subsequent talks by Professor Doris Klee, vice-rector for human resources management and development at RWTH, and Professor Ansgar Büschges, vice-rector for human resources management and development at the University of Cologne.

The two talks specifically focused on research were particularly insightful – Digital Self-Marketing Strategies and Online Communication in Research, by Dr. Johanna Havemann from Access 2 Perspectives, and Understanding Responsibility in Research and Innovation by Dr. Ana da la Varga, Human Technology Center at RWTH.

This year’s highlight for the participants was once again the 75-minute workshops with experts Dr. Ulrike Preissler and Dr. Hubert Detmer from the German Association of University Professors and Lecturers Deutschen Hochschulverbandes, who answered questions and gave useful tips on the topics Applying for Tenure Track Professorships and Tenure Track and Appointment Negotiations.

In Career Booster Tenure Track?, Professor Dominik Wöll from RWTH and Dr. Christian Preusse from the University of Cologne discussed the topic in depth with the participants. They gave insights into the different career path options and shared their own personal experiences.

Besides the excellent networking opportunities for researchers, the event was further enhanced by two pieces of improvisational theater by The Stereotypes from Bielefeld, who presented the path to professorship in an entertaining way.

This year’s Advanced Talents Day repeated the success of its predecessors. A good 60 participants took part in the event and used the opportunity to reflect on their career path and further develop their personal career plan.
